Michael Dean, Principal IT Auditor, joined the Office of Audit, Risk, and Compliance in April 2016. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master’s degree in Public Affairs from the Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. At Virginia Tech, Michael is responsible for leading and completing IT-focused and risk based audits, training and assisting staff IT auditors, and providing support and technical guidance to investigative and non-IT audit staff.
Michael has over 18 years of experience in the audit and IT audit field. He started his career with the Texas State Auditor’s Office, where he conducted compliance and performance audits. He left the Texas State Auditor’s Office to help establish a new office in Austin, Texas for an expanding CPA firm, Clifton Gunderson, LLP. At Clifton Gunderson, Michael focused on managing and performing audit projects in the healthcare and HIPAA security areas. He also managed multiple SAS 70 and SSAE 16 engagements, as well as audits for the Department of Defense. The Austin office of Clifton Gunderson was ultimately sold to a leading firm in government healthcare audits, Myers and Stauffer, LC. After a combined total of almost 12 years in public accounting, Michael left Myers and Stauffer for Virginia Tech.
Michael is a Certified Internal Auditor, a Certified Information Systems Auditor, a Certified Government Auditing Professional, and a Project Management Professional. He is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, ISACA, and the Association of College and University Auditors.
